WHERE WERE THE TRIBES

This is but a small list of the the areas and what Nations/tribes lived in them. Remember each Nation had many tribes under it,and in most cases there were to many to list here. This list cover (1650) the past not todays reservations.To see map of the areas mentioned see map page 7.

SUBARCTIC = This covers the area we know today as Canada. Dogrib, Beaver, Chipewyan, Cree, Montagnais-Naskapi

EASTERN WOODLANDS = This covers all of the following states: ME, NH, VT, MA, CT, NJ, WV, PA, NY, OH, IN, IL, WI, MI, parts of CANADA, TN, KY MN:   Micmac, Abenaki, Wampanoag, Narraganset, Mohegan, Delaware, Pawhatan, Shawnee, Illinois, Miami, Kickapoo, Potawatomi, Iroquois, Huron, Ottawa, Menomini, Ojibway, Winnebago, Sauk, Fox

SOUTHEAST = This covers all of the following states: FL, AL, GA, SC, NC, parts of TN, KY, MS:  Cherokee, Chickasaw, Catawaba, Upper Creek, Lower Creek, Aplachee, Choctaw, Natchez, Chitimaca,Timucua, Seminole, Calusa

GREAT PLAINS = This covers all the following states: ND, SD, IA, MO, AR, OK, NE, MT, WY, part of TX, CO, ID:  Blood, Blackfoot, Piegan, Gros Ventre, Crow, Assinibone, Hidatsa, Mandan, Santee Sioux, Sioux, Northern Cheyenne, Ponca, Oglala sioux, Pawnee, Iowa, Arapaho, Otoe, Kansa, Southern Cheyenne, San Felipe, Kiowa, Osage, Kiowa, Apache, Comanche, Lipan Apache, Tonkawa

NORTH WEST COAST = These are all Canada, WA, OR coast lines:  Tlingit, Haida, Tsimshian, Kwakiutl, Salish, Nootka, Cowichan, Chinook, Bella Coola,

PLATEAU = Part of inland WA, OR:  Kutenai, Swamish, Yakima, Flathead, Aishram, Nez Perce, Umatilla

GREAT BASIN = Parts of WA, OR, ID, UT, CA:  Klamath, Bannock, Modoc, Shoshoni, Paiute, Ute, Jicarilla Apache, Mohave

SOUTHWEST = Parts of TX, AZ, NM, CO, UT, CA:  Taos, Hopi, Acoma, Navajo, Zuni, Pueblo, Chiricahua Apache, Mescalero Apache, Yaqui, Pima, Papago, Yuma

CALIFORNIA = All Western CA:   Tolowa, Wintun, Yurok, Hupa, Karok, Yuki Maidu, Pomo, Miwok, Yokuts, Salinan, Chumash, Luiseno, Cahuilla, Hamia, Diegueno
